چکیده

Upper-limb amputees have a unique set of needs and issues they will encounter over a lifetime. Some of the unique issues upperlimb amputees encounter are self-esteem and body-image concerns, the impact on appearance and to social abilities, secondary post-traumatic adjustments for the majority of traumatic injury patients, and feelings of isolation from other amputees, among other concerns. A thorough understanding of the issues facing upper-limb amputees will assist prosthetists, technicians, and other professionals involved in rehabilitative care in providing comprehensive services and ultimately impacting prosthetic success. This exploratory study addresses both quantitative and qualitative data demonstrating psychological implications that impact the overall prosthetic treatment process and, ultimately, patient success. A review of literature of therapeutic influence on many conditions will be adapted to address the needs and issues of the upper-limb amputee population. A proposal for the development of a preliminary assessment instrument and resources will be gathered with an overview of evidence-based practices that will provide practitioners with the tools needed to attend to the exclusive needs of this population. An overview of the psychological impact of amputation and the various ways issues may manifest in the rehabilitative process will enlighten all care professionals involved to provide appropriate treatment and collaboration among disciplines.

Balance in lower limb child amputees.

Postural stability of five unilateral above-knee amputee children was measured when wearing the SACH and the experimental Child Amputee Prosthetic Project (CAPP) prosthetic foot. Excursions of the centre of pressure of the supportive forces were recorded via force platform during sustained weight-shifting forward, backward, left, right, and during normal standing. Visual proprioception effects ...

Managing the upper extremity amputee: a protocol for success.

Since the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, over 541 clients with major limb amputations have been seen in the Military Healthcare System. Design and Experiments on a Novel Biomechatronic Hand

An “ideal” upper limb prosthesis should be perceived as part of the natural body by the amputee and should replicate sensory-motor capabilities of the amputated limb. However, such an ideal “cybernetic” prosthesis is still far from reality: current prosthetic hands are simple grippers with one or two degrees of freedom, which barely restore the capability of the thumb-index pinch. This paper de...

Expert opinions on success factors for upper-limb prostheses.

The goal of this study was to gather the opinions of prosthetics experts on the most important factors for the successful use of upper-limb (UL) prostheses, compare them with those of prosthesis users, and ultimately direct research efforts in this field. UL prosthetics experts were asked to compare the importance of the comfort, function, and cosmesis of a prosthetic device for a transhumeral ...
